A day out to Abbey Leys 100th market with Foodlink and FeedingManchester

Last weekend, Feeding Manchester teamed with Foodlink Northwest for a day out to celebrate the 100th market at Abbey Leys farm in Cheshire. This trip was designed for Foodlink Card members and included an introduction to the farm by the farmers themselves, transport from the city, light refreshment and a raffle prize!

Subscribers to the Foodlink Card join in with other local food lovers, enthusiasts, chefs, artisan producers, growers and farmers to enjoy some of the finest local food experiences the North West has to offer. By becoming a card member, individuals support local food across the area and are granted privileged access to information about special deals, promos and events throughout the five counties.

It was a beautiful day and idyllic location for a market, with the sun shining and the happy hens of Abbey Leys pecking about freely. When we arrived at the market we were met with hot drinks by the farm owners, Janet and Tim. They gave us an introduction to their business and their monthly market.

With about 2300 chickens, and the production of about 1400 eggs per day over the span of 85 acres, plus running a farm shop and market – they have a lot to keep them busy! Their eggs are sold through Manchester Veg People and are also available at other outlets across Manchester like Out of the Blue.

We then went to explore the FARMA-certified market which was made up of producers from within a 50-mile radius. The market spanned two barns, one organic and the other conventional, and offered a selection of great producers from across the North West.

Abbey Leys had a variety of their own eggs and potatoes for sale, of course, but there was much more available. Gazegill Organic, from Lancashire, was in attendance, accompanied by two adorable Shorthorn calves and the some Hampshire Down lambs (only two days old!) with their mum. They also had a wide range of their organic meat and even raw milk!

We were happy to see the Great North Pie Co. in attendance but disappointed to learn they’d sold out of pies by 11am — just about the same time we arrived!

There was also handmade pasta from Nonna Theresa, juices from Dunham Massey, yogurt and cheese from Tiresford Guernsey Gold and local vegetables from Pimlotts to name but a few!

After we’d browsed the stalls and site speaking to producers and making purchases as we liked we reconvened for soups and sandwiches before choosing a winner for our raffle! The winner, Miyu, received a hamper of organic and local products provided by members of FeedingManchester.

We then received a quick introduction to the work that Kindling Trust is doing alongside Abbey Leys before heading back to the city with our local food purchases in tow!

The day was a great chance for Manchester residents to get out into the countryside and personally meet the farmers, see where their food comes from, learn about different local food projects across the North West and enjoy a great day out!
